ESZTERGOM - ONE OF THE OLDEST HUNGARIAN TOWNS
After the arrival of the Magyars in the early 10th Century, Esztergom was towards the end of the same century seat of the Grand Prince Géza and then to the end of the 12th century, one of the headquarters of Hungarian rulers. After the great Slavic uprising in 963  Emperor Otto III governed between 980 and 1002. In 1001/1002 the archbishopric of Gran for a Christianization of the country—corresponding until the 18th century to today´s Slovakia and known as the church's main province of the Kingdom of Hungary—was established. The Archbishop of Gran bore the title Primate of Hungary. Almost simultaneously with the creation of the diocese Stephen I was  crowned as a King of Hungary in 1000/1001. The first royal palace, which included a Christian basilica, was built on the castle hill.

From 1543 to 1683 the city was part of the Ottoman Empire. After the liberation from the Turks power the city was devastated and had to be repopulated. The majority of new settlers consisted of Germans and Slovaks. Until 1708 the city was declared a free royal city.

Between 1838 and 1846 the city was under the influence of work of the architect József Hild. Group of architects directed by him designed and built the largest classical basilica of the country, the Assumption Cathedral and St. Adalbert, which is widely visible on the castle hill. It is the largest Catholic cathedral in Hungary and one of the largest churches in Europe. There is a Renaissance chapel, which is affiliated to the Basilica. The Basilica is also called home, mother and teacher of Hungarian churches (in Latin: caput, mater et magistra ecclesiarum Hungariae.

The Danube-bridge, connecting Esztergom with Štúrovo (Slovakia), was blown up by German troops in World War II and until 2001 it was impassable. In 2001 the reconstruction  was completed. The new Maria Valeria-bridge functions as a regional border crossing to Slovakia again.

The European Youth Week 2013 in Czech Republic

The latest European Week took place between  29th of June to 6th of July.

Almost 40 participants from 9 countries (Lithuania, Moldavia, Poland, Switzerland, Serbia, Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary and Czech Republic) were discovering one of the most beautiful towns in Czech Republic during a common week.

The 2013 year is named Adolph Kolping’s Year. These youngsters worked together in workshops and discussed, what Kolping’s words mean for us today and how to use them in the future in social life. On Sunday participants celebrated the  inauguration of a new monument of Adolph Kolping in the meeting house in Vyhlidka, where participants were accommodated.

As always during the Kolping Youth’s activities an intercultural evening was organized. Participants of meeting brought from their countries the best traditional dishes and presented typical and well-known songs and dances.

There were many opportunities to visit the largest Czech towns like Praque and Brno. The most interesting was a visit in the brewery in Brno, where youngsters could know the process of beer producing.

In the Czech Republic there are also a lot of caves. On Monday young people went by boats through a cave in the national park Moravsky Kras. On Friday participants walked around the cave named Byci skala. In Czech Byci skala means Bulls’ rock. This is the most famous archaeological discovery in Moravia (geographical region in the eastern part of Czech Republic).

How was the Kolping Youth Week in this year? The happy faces of the participants speak for themselves. Many thanks to the organizers: Katka, Aneta and Michal for the nice atmosphere and great unforgettable experiences!
